What is poetry ?
We can write limericks and still not be regarded as poets. A poem can rhyme or serve as a conversation would in relaying the details for the theme, if the words are well turned out then we get that sensation that the words were worth reading. We
invest our time reading a brand new piece of poetry yet not being immediately aware of any style at all. We use our inner voice for
thinking what we read and then visualising or interpreting it. We translate words into scenes we understand and maybe recall a
location in a dream or a film or TV show that seems suited to those words. Others see differently just as they would in enjoying certain phrases or Holy Bible quotes or TV
catchphrases and so on.
The poem can be expressed in various ways such as precisely numbered syllables or irregular phrases just for a touch of variety. Conversations twist and turn and poems using dialogue can do that,
too. So while many a poem or a piece of poetry can be regarded as just another poem, we don’t call it just another poetry, do we? So a poem is more associated with the creation of text that’s meant to inform or entertain. Even nonsense poems have their purposes and tricky wordplay ideas just to be
playful. It’s why children like some poems immediately while others put the fear of ODD into them. Because poetry can be poor fare at times, many hesitate when they come across a poem, even if it’s a short verse… Here we go, love and above…
It’s why many poets seek to impress us with word play, to try the clever clogs approach, rather than write for children to recite and not just having the adults recite, like the professional actors have done for YouTube videos. Poetry is
the stuff of short quotations such as seen in the pinterest website collection of quotations rather than the full poem itself. The word
poetry is more associated with a poetry collection rather than a poems collection.
Poets would prefer to use the rhymes for poetry rather than the rhymes for poem. So there are reasons why one syllable is used to say the word poem as pome, as in the Nat King Cole song, Walking My Baby Back Home with him describing the scene as he is reciting a poem yet sounding like reciting a pome…
Whatever the context leads to, the poetry teacher is still the poetry teacher not the poem teacher, because poetry indicates more than just a single poem. A poetry anthology is a collection, just like my free e-book poetry collection of 2,700+ poems on the poemhunter poetry website… My favourite poetry collections are in the UKexamples of the Fireside Book as well as the Friendship Book…
Walking My Baby Back Home
