(A Weeping Letter)
Have you ever encountered a weeping letter?
Please tell me where I met it?
Was it on the red of my lips where I drew it?
Or on the blush of my cheek?
Was it wandering through the gypsy-like flow of my hair?
Or after sunset, dwelling in the allure of my body?
Or did I encounter it in the henna design on my hand?
Please tell me,
What was it like when it wept?
Was my sorrow beautiful and enchanting?
Or was my dream hateful, dull, and black?
Did my pen dance with it, gloating and mocking?
Or is my letter discarded in the wasteland?
Come forward and pick it up with your tenderness, wipe away my tears.
For you haven’t read how my pain is etched upon the pages.
And the lines bled for the epic of separation, breaking my pen.
And longing tore at my ribs and severed my veins.
Please, if you ever catch a whiff of my fragrance on your paths,
Scatter your breath on the winds of longing, perhaps they will caress my face with hope.
Distances tremble, scattering the longing for our reunion in my dreams.
I wrote them in bloody letters, perfumed by the warmth of your eyes, in my notebooks.
Is my name still engraved in your heart, and my spirit dwelling there?
Or has joy vanished, and the roses of love withered within your ribs, and the fragrance of my words been buried?
If you encounter a letter weeping, give it the address of my city.
For you were not fair with memories; before parting, you gifted light to my darkness. And after our last meeting, I conceived the embryo of my dreams.
The pen feared to see my fear when the embrace lingered, so it rushed forth weeping for me.
Your farewell made all sorrows lean their weight upon my shoulder.
A question that kept fleeing, and you alone are my answer.
If you encounter a letter, kiss it with lips of loyalty and send peace to my eyes.
For all my letters weep because of the distance between us. (I bring you the news)
